Solid Waste Collection


The Limestone County Solid Waste Department provides Automated Solid Waste Collection Service for the residents of unincorporated Limestone County only. The residential collection service is established upon application for utility services with Athens Utilities. Monthly billing for residential garbage service is included on the residential electric bill.

All residential customer routes for unincorporated Limestone County will be serviced weekly, including customers who infrequently have garbage for collection. Any deviation from normal collection days due to holidays are posted on this page, and will appear in the local newspaper, local news websites, and social media pages.

Furniture, appliances, bulk, items, leaves, limbs, yard waste, and landscaping/construction debris are not collected in the unincorporated areas of Limestone County. It is the responsibility of the property owner to dispose of all bulk items. Curbside garbage pickup is for residential household garbage only. Limestone County Recycling

The Limestone County Recycling Program will begin on April 3, 2023.

Location for Recycling Drop-off: 1301 N. Jefferson St. (just south of Elm Street) NO OTHER LOCATIONS are currently available for drop-off.

Hours of Operation: 7 am – 3 pm Monday through Thursday ONLY. Gates will be locked outside of these hours and anyone caught dumping will be prosecuted. Drop off center will be monitored with cameras.

RECYCLING GUIDELINES

Limestone County Trash Attack Days

On at least two occasions during every calendar year, through September 30, 2026, on the first Saturday of each April and the first Saturday of each October, are designated as Trash Attack Days for Limestone County. You will be able to dump debris for FREE for Spring cleaning and Fall cleanup. Limestone County residents may take a trailer or pickup truck load of debris to the Republic Services Transfer Station, 16100 BFI Lane (off Hwy. 72, just east of 7 Mile Post Rd.). Times will be 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

GUIDELINES AND RESTRICTIONS: Maximum of 4 automobile tires, any appliance with Freon must have the compressor removed or be accompanied by a certificate stating that the Freon has been professionally removed. No hazardous household or medical waste. Contractors may NOT dump for free. Must provide PROOF RESIDENCY (EX. CURRENT UTILITY BILL).

Alabama Scrap Tire Program

A past program that recycled around 115,000 tires is returning to Limestone County. The Limestone County Commission is excited to announce the Alabama Scrap Tire Program is back in Limestone County through September 2024. This program is made possible through a grant that was received from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. All tires that are recycled will be used to make different products. Residents may recycle their tires at any of the four Limestone County Commission’s District Sheds between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tires must be loaded into the collection trailers located at each location. This program is for Limestone County residents only and is not to be used by any dealers.
