Council on Aging

The Limestone County Aging Program utilizes available resources to empower older adults to enhance their independence, personal satisfaction, vitality, and the ability to enrich the quality of life for themselves and others. Athens-Limestone County Senior Center offers a variety of health, educational, and recreational activities such as arts & crafts, exercise programs, and games.

Services provided through the Council on Aging for people 60 or older include:

  • Transportation is available Monday through Friday to nutrition centers, medical appointments, grocery shopping, and for personal business. A specially equipped vehicle is available for those in wheelchairs
  • In-home services available to homebound older adults include light housekeeping, shopping assistance, meal preparations, and laundry
  • Meals-on-Wheels volunteers deliver nutritious lunches Monday through Friday to qualified homebound persons
  • Nutrition centers throughout the county provide opportunities for socialization, education, and recreation, and serve noon meals Monday through Friday
  • Senior RX/Prescription Drug Program (NO AGE REQUIREMENT) is available for seniors who need assistance with prescription drug bills. Seniors must meet income guidelines
  • SHIP Insurance Counseling-for Medicare and Medicaid
  • Health promotion activities include routine health screenings, education on all aspects of health and wellness, exercises on Senior Center equipment, health fairs, and in-home health screening by visiting nurses
  • Legal assistance, for matters such as consumer or credit and billing problems, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, S.S.I., housing, and wills are provided by an attorney on staff with the TARCOG Area Agency on Aging

There are many needs, which can be met by volunteers sharing their time.
